Doesn't have to be that expensive. Check out http://www.gotoday.com/NZ_FGAA.ASP for airfare + car rental. This is off-season (Jun-Sept). I used go-Today.com for a trip to Paris and they're a reputable travel agency. We flew Air New Zealand and our tix for early May (mid-late fall there) were $1000 from LA to Auckland, NZ. It is a 15-16 hour trip from LA but the food is good on Air NZ and you see lots of movies.
